Character Limit
SMS messages have a character limit of 160 characters per message. If messages are not encoded with GSM-7, the limit is reduced to 70 characters. When messages exceed 160 characters, they are split into multiple individual SMS messages.

GSM-7
GSM-7 is the standard encoding for GSM messages, utilizing a 7-bit default alphabet. In SMS transmission, 140 8-bit octets are sent at a time. GSM-7 encoded SMS messages can carry up to 160 characters. Large messages are segmented into 153 characters each. For instance, a message of 171 characters will be sent as two messages: one with 153 characters and another with 18 character

UCS-2 is a character encoding standard in which characters are represented by a fixed-length 16 bits (2 bytes). UCS-2 encoding message is 70 characters each, large messages will be segmented into 67 characters each. For example, 81 characters will be sent as two messages.
